Two weeks of sporting activities at the Mar y Sol SPA & Sporthotel in Tenerife

Klaus D. Herzog, from the DRS Rollikids

Accesible Beach
I’ve been coming to Tenerife for New Year’s Eve for the past 6 years, but this time I’ve been able to spend the whole of February here: 2 weeks of sporting activities with the kids from the German Wheelchair Sports Federation (DRS) and friends from the Mar y Sol SPA & Sporthotel, and another 2 weeks on holiday, going on trips, discovering new places, reading and lazing around in the sun in the south of the island. All in all, my stay was fantastic, meeting a lot of memorable people and having a wonderful time. It’s a shame that Ute and Samira weren’t there this time. But let’s start at the beginning.
When I got off the plane in Tenerife, my wheelchair was at the door, I had all my luggage and the sun was shining - as it almost always is in the south of the island. I had arrived. I had arrived to another world to one of the islands of eternal springtime. The past year and my day-to-day routine were behind me. A friendly employee from “Sin barreras” accompanied me as a VIP and made sure I reached the airport exit safe and sound with my tons of luggage, where my transport to the hotel was waiting for me.
This time I was accompanied on the bus by another two tourists - one of whom was also in a wheelchair - who were going to another hotel. The question of where we were each staying soon arose, “ ... the Mar y Sol, oh yeah! That’s the hotel for the disabled, isn’t it?” So, it seems that the Mar y Sol is well known in the circles, although with fewer people who are actually familiar with it and able to rate it. A similar thing happened to Konrad and Maria, from the region of Franconia. They first stayed in Gran Canaria and then visited the Mar y Sol on a trip to Tenerife. After a brief period of familiarisation, they were over the moon with it. Konrad is responsible for the phrase “Hey, it’s great the number of things you can do in a wheelchair!”, once he had overcome the first lessons in balance and equilibrium and was able to focus on the many different possibilities of the wheelchair.
In terms of construction and facilities, the Mar y Sol is simply fantastic. Given that it is on a hillside, it doesn't seem as large as it actually is. Its architecture is open and elegant, with areas of great activity and others to which you can retire, although with the pool area in full view if that’s what you want.

The Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol supports the “Toys for a smile” toy and gift collection campaign by the Arona Local Council Social Welfare Office.
In the eighth edition of this action, the direct transfer of toys to the needy families has been replaced by gift vouchers. This allows the fathers and mothers to participate personally in the selection of the toys for their children. The sole aim of this project is to preserve the magic and excitement of Twelfth Night and to ensure that all the children receive their toys, lighting up Arona with smiles.
The Spa & Sport Hotel has helped the Three Kings gather gifts for the children most in need in Arona.

World congress of thalidomides  … meeting again!
05.11.2016
From May 20th - 27th over 170 people from different and partly far countries, all affected by fetal defects caused by Thalidomide, will come together for the second time for an active exchange and intense encounter in Tenerife. Situated in the beautiful and barrier-free Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol this gathering offers a great opportunity to meet "old" friends and make new ones all along with appealing social activities. A lot of different workshops (like photo or jewellery-making-classes, dance- or swimming-lessons) provide the occasion to discover new activities, expand personal borders or just dip into all senses of wellbeing.
Thalidomide
What is Thalidomide? Thalidomide is a drug that was prescribed during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was developed as a sleeping pill, recommended especially for pregnant women despite the fact that it had not been tested for this use. By 1960, thalidomide was found to damage the development of unborn babies, especially if it had been taken in the first four to eight weeks of pregnancy. The drug led to the arms or legs of the babies being very short or incompletely formed. More than 10,000 babies were affected around the world. As a result of this disaster, thalidomide was banned.

Defibrillator

Pioneers among the Hotels in Tenerife.
The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel now has a portable defibrillator and qualified personnel to deal with emergencies requiring first aid while waiting for the ambulance. The portable defibrillator saves a lot of lives, as cardiopulmonary resuscitation is essential during the first few minutes after a heart attack.

Statistics show that 95% of those affected die if they do not receive immediate assistance.

Wheelchair swing in the sports hall

15.08.2016
Swinging isn’t an easy game. It’s a fundamental bodily experience that we now offer our wheelchair guests in the sports hall.
The wheelchair-adapted swing was invented by a motor development teacher at a special education school. The swing provides fun for both young and old, but especially to children. Its inventor says: “Rocking and swinging especially have a great effect on the sense of situation and position in space. Those without one are missing an important element in the development of intelligence.”
The swing is made in workshops for disabled people. Qualified technicians, masters in their speciality, work with the people and their respective capacities. This swing, which is produced to meet social criteria, could be called a fair trade product, as it is useful for the people who make it and for users and involves no inhumane treatment, as occurs in some parts of the so-called third world.

Maximum load: 125 kg

New pool lift

15.08.2016

Since our hotel opened, the two large pools have included a crane with a seat so that disabled guests can easily get in and out. However, some of our guests do not have the necessary stability to remain upright in the seat and, therefore, we have recently installed a second crane in the heated pool, equipped with a harness system so that people with very reduced mobility can access the pool safely.

4th Mar y Sol international wheelchair table tennis training camp 2016

15.08.2016
From 13th to 20th July 2016, the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel held the fourth international wheelchair table tennis training camp, under the technical management of the German coach Dennis Michel and his assistant Christian Palmberg.
As in previous years, the camp particularly involved group training sessions and focused on serving and backhand techniques, correct grip and direct and backhand play with topspin. The participants were also offered individual training, where Dennis Michel analysed the game skills of each player and provided personalised training sessions.
The training programme was exhausting and required a lot of physical strength. However, the participants were, of course, given time to relax at the pool or on the beach. In the evenings they met at the pool bar to chat and exchange experiences. In short, there was a great balance between competition sport and a holiday.
The icing on the cake was the fourth Mar y Sol friendly wheelchair table tennis tournament that took place on Tuesday 19th July 2016. The winner was Jörg Reusch, Heinrich Bliersbach came second and Alfred Sina was able to tie up third place.

The fifth training camp has already been planned for 16th to 23rd August 2017. Next year’s aim is for inclusion, and the goal is for wheelchair users and those able to walk to train together and measure their skills.

The same procedure as last year - the same procedure as every year!

26.01.2016
The same every year, yet always different and fascinating: for the fifth time now, the DRS RolliKids monitors and the sport centre instructors at the Mar Y Sol SPA & Sporthotel in Tenerife organised two weeks of sporting activities for hotel guests.
The mixture of participants was more wide-ranging and diverse than ever, from the very young to the relatively elderly (yet in shape), and there were activities for everyone, whether they were professional sportspeople, enthusiasts or even couch potatoes. These included basketball, boccia or bowling, as well as table tennis, dancing, swimming or mobility exercises for two full weeks, despite the fact that the good weather and beautiful countryside in Tenerife or La Gomera stopped some from taking part in the sporting activities on the odd occasion.
The sports hall is really well equipped and is now used increasingly more often by both hotel guests and by children or adults from Arona and the surrounding area or from other facilities. However, once again I came across two people who did not discover it until the last week of their stay and they were truly amazed at the gem of a hall located in the very heart of the Mar Y Sol: a pleasant temperature, shaded yet bright and welcoming and fantastically equipped.
As well as the different dishes during our activity weeks, something special was served, just like in “Dinner for One”: We enjoyed “Music with gymnastics” or table tennis “with no net or second base”, and there was also a cocktail for dessert. Beginners and top-class players alike had lots of fun with “the best minute”, the boccia tournament and the salsa and they are looking forward to next time.
We can’t wait to come back again and we will do our very best to make sure everyone is happy. This does not mean that there are no activities when the DRS monitors aren’t there. Anni and Jorge, the sports program directors, the Fischer family and Mrs Kraus, the hotel manager would love to welcome anyone interested. What’s more, special events are always being planned, such as the table tennis training camp or the international wheelchair rugby cup, etc.

5th Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup 2015

18.01.2016
The 5th Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup 2015 took place from 14th to 21st December 2015 at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel in Tenerife.

The tournament was again this year organised by the Mar y Sol Hotel with the faithful cooperation and support of agency Frontcourt (Heiko Striehl).

Wheelchair rugby players from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Russia took part, all with the aim of pitting their sporting abilities against each other and, of course, to enjoy the warm sun of the Canary Islands. Sport, mutual exchanges with other players and, above all, fun and enjoyment of a short break are elements that make the Mar y Sol Cup stand out over other international tournaments.
For the players, the perfect place to hold the event was important. Here, everything is simply under one roof: the sports hall, the outdoor pool heated to 32ºC (with hoists), rooms and restaurant. Long trips by shuttle bus from different hotels were therefore saved and participants were able to make the most of the time between training sessions and matches to sunbathe, swim and relax.
Good food and the odd drink with their sporting colleagues rounded off the day. Many new friendships were formed and they agreed to return for the next Mar y Sol Cup. The 6th Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup is planned to be held during the week of 12th to 19th December 2016. Registrations are already being accepted.

2015 Sinpromi Accessible Architecture Awards

15.12.2015
At an awards ceremony held on 9th December 2015, Mr. Hans-Joachim Fischer, founder and managing director of the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel was presented with the 2015 Sinpromi Accessible Architecture Award by the president of the Island Council of Tenerife, Mr. Carlos Alonso.
This initiative is structured around The Island Society for the Promotion of the Disabled (Sinpromi, its Spanish acronym). These awards seek to promote the planning and construction of accessible environments and buildings, acknowledging public and private work that has included accessibility in an exemplary manner to encourage a change in the design of the space.

In the Innovation in Accessible Architecture category (included for the first time this year), the award was given to the "Accessible hotel. Holidays without barriers. Mar y Sol Hotel" project. Its innovation lies in offering a complete, accessible tourist package that includes not only physical access to the hotel but also personalised assistance to meet the needs of each guest.

1st Anniversary of the Company

31.07.2015
On 7th August, our service centre LeRo – Teralava S.L.U. will celebrate its first anniversary under the management of Ina Fischer. We look back very positively and especially with a great deal of satisfaction, as the year has seen many changes in customer service and the updating of technical aids.
We have been very successful and have had a great time during our first year following the change in ownership. A fantastic, friendly team, top class service and the loyalty of old customers, together with the large number of new customers, are proof of a job well done. But we don't want to rest on our laurels. We have marked even greater goals for the forthcoming years, remaining true to our standards and continuously improving the way we work and the range of technical aids.
Our slogan is now: Let's Roll ....

3rd School material collection campaign

25.07.2015
The Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol supports again this year the "CELA PROJECT" from the social welfare office of the community of Arona and participates in the third school material collection campaign. This project aims to avoid scholastic failure and discrimination caused by missing school material.
On the part of the hotel one student of each year starting from pre-school up to the end of secondary education receives a complete set with all the material needed for the academic year 2015/2016.
We hope that our donation will contribute to enable the students to realize their academic education with equality of opportunities.
We wish all students a successful new academic year.
3rd Mar y Sol 2015 International wheelchair table tennis training camp 15.07.2015
An international wheelchair table tennis training camp was held this year in Tenerife for the third time. It took place under professional conditions in the sports hall at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel and was directed by trainer Dennis Michel and his assistant Marcel Schuck.
For five days, with a total of 20 training sessions, 11 players exercised in a strong training group, their performance sometimes being enhanced through games with highly experienced players. Participants from Germany, Italy and Spain worked using training methods and specifications from the trainer, individually adapted to suit their skills. In comparison with last year, the players were able to visibly improve their level.
The group atmosphere during the sessions was very good every day and, despite sometimes being exhausted, they were able to reach the end with a bit of humour. On the last day there was a small final tournament in which Frank, surprisingly yet quite worthily, was able to beat Alfred and Heinrich to become the winner. The audience and other table tennis fans were able to see the savoir fair of the participants: an exciting mixed tournament rounded off the exhausting days of training.
Many thanks once again to all of the organisers, to the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel with its excellent conditions for the training camp and all camp helpers, both present and in the background. Very special thanks must go to our tireless Heinrich Bliersbach who brings us together every year!
I can't wait for the next camp!

World congress of thalidomides  … meeting again!
27.06.2015
Almost 20 years after the first international gathering of thalidomides in Sweden we will now meet again on the beautiful, sunny island of Tenerife. From July 4th – 11th over 170 people from different and partly far countries, all affected by fetal defects caused by Thalidomide, will come together for an active exchange and intense encounter in Tenerife.
Situated in the beautiful and barrier-free Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol this gathering offers a great opportunity to meet "old" friends and make new ones all along with appealing social activities. The program will be enriched by professional dissertations and barrier-free excursions such as a dolphin & wale-boat-trip or the visit of the Loro Parque. Embedded in magnificent nature, this gathering can also offer a first approach to discovering Spanish style and culture, for example at the Spanish Goodbye-Dinner or by individual trips around the island. In this way the World congress of Thalidomides in Tenerife does not only provide a platform for an intense exchange close to reality but puts into the centre the experiencing of enjoyable activities and the enhancement of the quality of life… all being affected by Thalidomide.

Telefónica Ability Awards
22.01.2015

The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel has been presented with the Telefónica Ability Award for Accessibility. Hans-Joachim Fischer, founder and owner of the hotel, collected the prestigious award at the gala ceremony held on 12th January 2015 in Madrid. The Telefónica Ability Award was presented to him personally by Her Majesty the Queen of Spain, Letizia Ortiz.

The Telefónica Ability Awards recognise companies and public institutions that work towards accessibility and integration in a particularly committed and innovative manner.

Companies receiving the Telefónica Ability Awards have proven to meet a wide range of requirements regarding accessibility and integration, in which the disabled always take centre place.
The Telefónica Ability Awards are therefore a seal of quality that certifies the work of the different companies aimed at the disabled. The Mar y Sol received the award for the exemplary barrier-free infrastructure throughout the hotel complex.
The selection process was based on extensive evaluation by the international auditing company Price Waterhouse (PwC). The jury, formed by a team of experts in politics and economics, selected 53 finalists from among 482 institutions and 175 innovative companies and the 10 winners in the different categories were revealed at the gala ceremony.
The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel management and staff are delighted to have received this special award and feel that their work has been acknowledged. This public recognition is great motivation for everyone to continue working towards ensuring the wellbeing of guests.

Second active wheelchair holidays at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel Absolute highlight: surfing

25.10.2014

The elite sportswomen Gerda Pamler and Irmgard Bruck spent their second active wheelchair holidays with a small group at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel from 3rd to 17th October 2014.

Gerda Pamler reports:
We wanted our second holidays at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel in Tenerife to be full of action again, which is why we booked several kayak trips and a quad ride beforehand. One of the kayak trips took us directly to the port of Los Cristianos towards Palm Mar, in the hope of spotting dolphins. We were incredibly lucky and the dolphins leapt in formation at a distance of around 10 metres from us. On another kayak trip were able to see sea turtles while snorkelling.
The quad ride was not a problem for us either in wheelchairs. The two and a half-hour trip from Santiago del Teide ran through a forest area next to Teide National Park. Even the jet skis were great. We reached speeds of 50 km/h at Los Gigantes, flying over the Atlantic. We also really wanted to try two-man paragliding, but unfortunately the wind conditions were not good enough so we will have to wait until next year.
Top on our list this year was to surf the waves of the Atlantic. Personally, this was the highlight of my holidays. Our first surfing class was at Playa de Las Vistas, adapted for the disabled and where they have everything, from aquatic wheelchairs to accessible toilets. There were barely any waves on this beach, which we initially really did not want either.
The "Surf Academy Arona" school at Playa de las Américas brought three different sizes of boards. Five fantastic instructors looked after us, four test pilots: two with complete paraplegia, one leg amputee and another who was able to walk. Lifting your upper body while facing downwards, rowing with your arms while keeping your balance was truly exhausting. However, the instructors were impressed by the fact that we fell off the board much fewer times than able-bodied beginners.
At the next surfing class we were daring enough to try it on the waves. In the surfing area at Playa de las Américas the waves reached heights of around 1-1.5 metres. Wow! That was exciting stuff! The monitors hung on behind our boards and helped us to paddle towards the waves with their flippers. Then we just had to wait for them to arrive. We learned how to paddle over the waves, to swim under them and to run with them. At the start, the surfing monitor knelt on the back of my board to control and slow it down. Afterwards I went alone, just being pushed from behind to catch the wave and was able to trace curves and stop precisely at the shore by myself. Surfing is a completely new sport for me and I love it.
We are definitely returning to the Mar y Sol next year and will focus on surfing. We feel at home now at the Mar y Sol, the family atmosphere and the hotel infrastructures that are fully adapted for the disabled are ideal for us. During such active holidays, we also love to relax by the heated pool from time to time, use the therapy centre in the hotel and, above all, enjoy the great cuisine.

A child's dream come true!
16.09.2014

Maurice, Marcel and Nicklas and their parents spent their holidays at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel, making a great dream come true.

The triplets were born premature. Despite this, the three boys initially developed without any problems, although after a few years their parents noticed that something wasn't quite right with their boys. The diagnosis: Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Now, as their health continues to decline and their mobility problems worsen, Maurice, Marcel and Nicklas have to use an electric wheelchair. They wanted to go on a family holiday to Tenerife, visit the famous Loro Parque and feel the heat of the sun on their skin while their health permitted as such.

Through the German foundation Aktion Kindertraum (child's dream campaign), an anonymous donor made it possible for them to travel to Tenerife, paying for the flight and a 14-day stay at our fully wheelchair-accessible hotel, the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel, in the south of the island.

The triplets were delighted. Maurice and Nicklas particularly loved the 32°C heated pool and Marcel relaxed by dozing in the sun. They all played with the giant ball and boccia in the large sports hall and improved their driving skills on the mobility circuit. Swimming therapy in the pool, lymphatic drainage or ergotherapy felt great after their long excursions, such as the ones they made to Loro Parque or to Teide National Park. Their parents were also able to rest and relax in the pool area. The entire family enjoyed their holidays and felt extremely comfortable at the Mar y Sol. They especially highlighted the friendliness of the staff and the good food.

Stoppage of the beach shuttle service

25.07.2014
The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel has been providing this service to all guests free of charge for many years. Despite the fact that it has meant high additional costs for the hotel, it has not increased the satisfaction of our guests who repeatedly complained about the timetable and preferred to use an individual taxi service.

Due to a lack of use and its high costs, the hotel management is forced to suspend the shuttle service as of 31st August 2014.

2nd School material collection campaign

24.07.2014
The Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol supports again this year the "CELA PROJECT" from the social welfare office of the community of Arona and participates in the second school material collection campaign. This project aims to avoid scholastic failure and discrimination caused by missing school material.
On the part of the hotel one student of each year starting from pre-school up to the end of secondary education receives a complete set with all the material needed for the academic year 2014/2015.
We hope that our donation will contribute to enable the students to realize their academic education with equality of opportunities.
We wish all students a successful new academic year.

2nd Mar y Sol international wheelchair table tennis training camp 2014

18.06.2014
The second international wheelchair table tennis training camp was held at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel from 4th to 10th June 2014 under the technical direction of the German coach Dennis Michel and his assistant David Czervan.
The creator of the event, Heinrich Bliersbach, has been a loyal, assiduous guest at the Mar y Sol for many years and is himself a passionate wheelchair table tennis player. This year's camp included players from German, Spain and Italy and he selected the professional team of coaches.
Each participant, regardless of disability, age or playing skills, was individually developed over five hours a day of training. The coach worked under the principle that the players, despite their capacity and style of play, would progress in a modern, effective direction, correcting their technical "mistakes" to obtain the best results.
The aim was to promote the skills of the players through modern training techniques and in different groups, depending on the level of play of the players (regardless of sex), reinforcing this with colleagues with a good level of play. Over the five days of the camp, each player added up around 20 hours of training. Furthermore, video recordings were made of each player, which were carefully analysed at the start and the end of the camp together with the coaches. Thanks to this method, the players were able to monitor their progress.
The camp ended on 10th June 2014 with the second Mar y Sol friendly wheelchair table tennis tournament. The winner was Berthold Scheuvens, Alfred Sina came second, as he did last year, and Lamyan Scheuvens was able to hold onto third place.
Next year's Mar y Sol training camp is most likely to take place in July. We will, of course, publish the corresponding announcement on our website.
By the way, Dennis Michel is to inaugurate his own wheelchair table tennis school on 15th August in Cologne. He has, however, noted down the 2015 camp in his agenda and will be delighted to provide professional assistance to players during the training sessions.

Arona Council and the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel presented the hotel's most loyal guests with an award on Monday, 30th December 2013.
The Mayor of Arona, Francisco Niño, the owner of the Mar y Sol Hotel, Hans-Joachim Fischer with his wife Elli Baum-Fischer, and the Councillor for Tourism in Arona, Evelin Santos, attended the event to acknowledge the guest's loyalty.
Mrs. Annie Kammerer (MS patient), Mr. Hencke with his wife Ilse (paraplegic) and the couple Herbert and Edeltraud Edelhuber with their son Markus (spastic tetraplegic) have been regular guests at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel for many years and have been on holiday to the hotel on more than 50 occasions.
The award-winning guests chose the Mar y Sol due to its excellent wheelchair-adapted facilities, the in-house therapy centre and the curative climate of the south-east of the island of Tenerife. All love the barrier-free infrastructure of Los Cristianos and the accessible beach.

3rd Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup 2013

14.12.2013
The 1st Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup 2013 took place on 11th and 12th December 2013 at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel in Tenerife.
The tournament was organised by the Mar y Sol Hotel together with the agency Frontcourt (Heiko Striehl).
Wheelchair rugby players from Germany, The Netherlands, USA and Switzerland, took part, all with the aim of pitting their sporting abilities against each other and, of course, to escape from the European winter to the warm sun of the Canary Islands.
The 4th Mar y Sol International Wheelchair Rugby Cup is planned to be held at the beginning of December 2014. Registrations are already being accepted.
A child's dream come true!
13.11.2013

Lavina was able to spend her holidays in Tenerife and discovered Loro Parque thanks to a special behind-the-scenes guided tour.

13 year-old Lavina suffers from an immunological disorder, is a diabetic and has arthritis. She and her family do not have it easy and have to tackle the limitations caused by the illness.

Lavina's hobby is animals, which make her forget her troubles and pains. At home, she visits the nearby zoos and was even able to do work experience in an important zoo. She learnt about the famous Loro Parque in Tenerife on the television, which led to her dream to be able to visit this great park someday.

Through the German foundation Aktion Kindertraum (child's dream campaign), an anonymous donor made her trip to Tenerife possible and paid for the travelling expenses and a 10-day stay in a fully wheelchair-accessible hotel, the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel in the south of the island.
Lavina was delighted. For the first time ever, she got on a plane and was able to go on holiday with her mother and sister. Of course, Loro Parque was the first stop on the holiday itinerary. It was here that Lavina was given a behind-the-scenes tour and was even able to get close to the dolphins. The visit to Jungle Park in the south was also a wonderful experience. Lavina enjoyed the remaining days of her holidays sunbathing, in the pool or on the beach. She thought the hotel staff was really friendly and attentive. The family quickly made friends with other guests and they highlighted the great holiday atmosphere. Even her health improved and the climate in the south-east of Tenerife seemed to work miracles.
Lavina cried as she left. “Everything is so wonderful here with you” she told us, and thanked Aktion Kindertraum for this unforgettable holiday.

Elite German para-Olympic sportswomen row for charity in Tenerife
22.10.2013
On 12th October 2013, the Canary Island foundation for mental health “En Pie” organised the first charity kayaking event in Tenerife. The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel supported this initiative and put Gerda Pamler and Irmgard Bruck on the starting line on behalf of the hotel.
The route started at Playa de Masca beach and continued around the west coast of Tenerife to the port of Los Gigantes. Despite the fact that the two athletes were not used to rowing in open sea, they finished easily in 1½ hours and made the most of their time to enjoy the impressive panorama of the cliffs. All participants were rewarded with a delicious paella, good music and an exciting paragliding acrobatics show.
Gerda Pamler is a para-Olympic mono-skiing winner and has been the slalom water ski record holder and world jumping champion for many years.
Irmgard Bruck is the German para-canoeing champion. The elite sportswomen were initially sceptical and did not expect this trip, which was initially only a sports challenge, to become a fun fortnight of holidays packed with activity.
The holiday residence was, of course, the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel, where good food, relaxation in the pool, activities in the sport centre and wellbeing in the therapy centres are ensured. The two sportswomen visited the beauty spots of the island on their own by adapted hire car. Activities such as swimming in the sea at the adapted beach of Los Cristianos and snorkelling off the south-east cost were also on the agenda.
Irmgard and Gerda already have plans for the forthcoming year. Apart from taking part in the charity kayaking event once again, they already have a quad ride around the El Teide National Park, surfing or even trying paragliding on their to-do list.
We take our hats off to you, ladies!

1st Mar y Sol international wheelchair table tennis training camp 2013

20.06.2013
From 10th to 14th June 2013, the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel held the first international wheelchair table tennis training camp, under the technical management of the German coach Frank Boden and his assistant Julia Kirsch.
The 5-day programme was very hard-going, but in turn extremely successful. Participants were able to improve their service and backhand techniques, perfect the correct grip, practise forehand and backhand with topspin, fine-tune positioning the ball and carry out coordination and conditioning exercises. Thanks to the excellent hotel facilities, the professional team of coaches, good food and, of course, the spring climate in Tenerife, participants classed the event as the best training camp ever.
Heinrich Bliersbach, a loyal guest at the Mar y Sol for many years, created this event and played an active role in the training units. Eight players took part this year. The goal is to promote the training camp throughout Europe and encourage players of different nationalities.
The icing on the cake was the first Mar y Sol friendly wheelchair table tennis tournament that took place on Friday 14th June 2013. The winner was Günther Block, Alfred Sina came second and Klaus Lerner was able to tie up third place.
There are already people interested in the second Mar y Sol training camp planned for June 2014. The precise dates will be published shortly, so don’t forget us and register in time ...

Happy Kidz Club Mar y Sol
17.05.2013
The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel in Tenerife offers a weekly summer programme at the Kidz Club for families with disabled and non-disabled children from 1st July to 31st August 2013.
The nicest weeks of the year should be fun for the whole family and not just for adults or for children. Given that parents and children have different interests and expectations of their holidays, our Happy Kidz Club is the best solution as it satisfies all members of the family.
Our therapists and sports monitors have designed a fun programme where parents and children can enjoy activities together. Depending on the child’s autonomy, parents can relax and enjoy their own interests: perhaps a treatment in our therapy centre, relaxation or a long walk along the beach.
Children can also enjoy playing, being noisy and sports with other kids. Parents of disabled children especially have a double load and are glad to be able to spend their holidays without having to worry about their children all day long and can enjoy time to themselves. Only children also benefit from the children’s club, as the other kids replace the brothers and sisters they don’t have.

2nd International Wheelchair Rugby Cup Mar y Sol 2012

18.12.2012
The 2nd International Wheelchair Rugby Cup Mar y Sol took place from the 7th to the 9th of December 2012 at the Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol in the South of Tenerife.
Once again the tournament has been organized by Hotel Mar y Sol in collaboration with Frontcourt Agency (Heiko Striehl, Germany) and brought together players from Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, United States, Great Britain and Russia under the Canary sun.
As for all tournaments, as well for the Mar y Sol Cup the emphasis is put on the sport competition, but far away from the European winter and thanks to the spring climate of the Islands this event has a very special attraction. The participants do call it shortly: “competition with holiday atmosphere”.
The cup was held under the double round robin format (all-play-all tournament) and fascinated spectators and teams during 3 days with powerful, very tactical and exciting matches. The highlight of the event has been the final game between the Heidelberg Lions from Germany and the Fighting Snakes from Nottwil, Switzerland. Only during the last period the German players were able to ensure their victory and were lionized as the winners of this cup. The team Preodelenia from Moscow reached the third place.
The International Mar y Sol Cup gains attention and popularity from year to year. The organizers are already awaiting many registrations for the coming tournament, which will take place in December 2013. Quick, let’s take note and bare in mind for the annual “holiday planning”.

Lea, 13 years old, fell ill with cancer when she was two years of age. After a long treatment period, her family though she had got over the worst. But then a brain disease overcame her, which made Lea a severely disabled child. She suffered from delays in development and, because of a spastic paralysis, she relies on a wheelchair.

Lea loves animals, especially dolphins. She regularly watches the German television programme, "People, animals and doctors". From there she grew the desire to meet Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt in person, and admire his work at the Loro Parque (Parrot Park) in Tenerife.

Through the German foundation Aktion Kindertraum (childhood dream campaign), an anonymous donor made it possible for her to travel to Tenerife and covered the costs of the trip and a 12-day stay at a hotel with full access for wheelchairs, the Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol in the south of the Island. Her visit to the Loro Parque was also assured thanks to a Premium ticket. Now she just needed one thing: How could she get to meet Dr. Reinschmidt?
The Management of the Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol went to see the doctor personally to ask him to help and it was successful. Last Saturday, Dr. Reinschmidt showed Lea the Loro Parque and that's how she achieved her special dream.

Arona Council and the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel presented the hotel's most loyal guest with an award on Friday, 27th April 2012.
The Mayor of Arona, José Alberto González, the owner of the Mar y Sol Hotel, Hans-Joachim Fischer, and the Councillor for Tourism in Arona, Francisco Niño, attended the event to acknowledge the guest's loyalty.
Mr. Spilker has been a regular guest at the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel since 1995 and has been on holiday to the hotel on 50 occasions. The award-winning guest chose the Mar y Sol due to its excellent wheelchair-adapted facilities, the in-house therapy centre and the curative climate of the south-east of the island of Tenerife. Over 50 children take part in the days to raise awareness of disability
20.04.2012

The Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel opened its doors for days that sought primarily to raise students' awareness of disability.
In the "change of perspective" project, students were given an insight into the issue of "people with disabilities" in a practical, palpable manner. They were informed of the different types of disability and were then given specific, actual experiences involving being in a wheelchair or not being able to see. The activity consisted of a special circuit in the Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel sports hall with practical exercises to simulate the day-to-day barriers faced by the disabled.
The mayor and the councillor for Tourism at Arona Council, José Alberto González Reverón and Francisco José Niño, respectively, visited the days to show their support for this special initiative of the Mar y Sol Hotel.
5th year students from the El Monte de Guargacho Preparatory and Primary School were the first to take part in this activity on 18th April 2012.

III. International Mar y Sol Open Tenerife 2012
28.03.2012
Have fun playing golf, while raising awareness of the integration of golfers with disabilities
Golf is the culmination of mind and body integration and while some golfers measure how straight and far they can hit the ball, others measure how hitting the ball enhances their life. Significant improvement as a result of participation in the game demonstrates determination, patience, and growth as a person. There truly is something about golf that can bring out the best in a person, and nowhere is this made more evident than at the International Mar y Sol Open for disabled and able-bodied golfers.
Known as the Mar y Sol Integration Tournament, for short, the 3rd tournament for mixed abilities was held on March 17th and 18th, 2012 at Amarilla Golf & Country Club.
All participants, with or without disabilities, are amateurs with an officially-recognised handicap. The able-bodied resident members of Amarilla Golf Club are committed to mixing socially with and competing against disabled golfers on an equivalent competitive level.
The reputation of the International Mar y Sol Open continues to grow and this year's event has once again attracted disabled and able-bodied golfers from all over Europe. It is a tremendous example to athletes of all abilities how sport can bring people together and help them excel.
All of the organizers gave up a lot of time and money to make this event happen because we want to facilitate the integration of disabled players from the whole of Europe into a major event. We thank our sponsors: Sinpromi, Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol, Teralava - Centro de Terapias, TUI Vital, The Players Golf Shop, Canary Golf Federation, Powerbasetec and Tenerife Tourism Corporation.
The Award Ceremony took place in the afternoon of March 18th, 2012 at Amarilla Golf & Country Club. The winners were awarded their prizes by Hans-Joachim Fischer (Owner of the Mar y Sol Hotel), Ian Shaw (Captain of the Amarilla Golf Club), Sue Gladwin (prospective Capatain of the Amarilla Golf Club) and Renate Kraus (Tournament Director and Manageress of the Mar y Sol Hotel).

Mar y Sol welcomed National Swedish Wheelchair Rugby Team for training camp
08.03.2012
Under the direction of the Canadian coach Benoit Labrecque the National Swedish Wheelchair Rugby team carried out a 10-day training camp in the Spa & Sport Hotel Mar y Sol. The camp was organized in preparation of the Paralympic Games in 2012.
Indeed, the programme from the 16th to the 26th February, 2012 was taut, but the current European Champions valued the event thanks to the excellent training facilities, the good food and of course the spring-like climate in Tenerife as the best training camp they ever had.
Mar y Sol Spa & Sport Hotel wishes the team a great success.

Mar y Sol receives the award for Universal Accessibility from AENOR
25.01.2012
Hotel Mar y Sol in Los Cristianos is the first hotel in the Canary Islands to receive this certificate from the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (Aenor).

Aenor thereby rubber stamps the fact that all people, irrespective of age or disability, have equal opportunity to freely access the entire hotel complex and, moreover, enjoy the facilities offered to the full - and this, even providing the highest degree of independence and safety for the guests.

The award "Certificate for Universal Accessibility" was handed over on January 18th 2012 on the occasion of an official celebration in Madrid, held under the auspices of the Spanish Tourism Trade Fair, Fitur. The first Vice-President of the government of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, along with the General Director of the Aenor Association, Avelino Brito and Manuel Romero, Commercial Director for Certification (Aenor) presented the certificate to Hans-Joachim Fischer , proprietor of the Mar y Sol Hotel.
Mr. Fischer was personally congratulated by the Mayor of Arona, José Alberto González, and the City Councillor for Tourism and Health, Francisco José Niño. Hotel Mar y Sol has proved itself to be the pioneer for completely accessible holidays for the community of Arona.
The Hotel Mar y Sol was opened in 1990 under the direction of Hans-Joachim Fischer. For a long period of time it was the first and only totally accessible hotel in Europe. Since then the Management and Hotel team have consistently developed and improved the standards in the hotel, making it a symbol of quality tourism for the disabled and their families in Europe. Mar y Sol certainly offers the best prerequisite conditions which guarantee healthy and pleasant holidays for guests with and without disabilities.
Receiving this award from Aenor confirms the status of the Mar y Sol as an important landmark for accessible tourism on the Archipelago. The hotel also convincingly fulfils the criteria set by Sinpromi's (Island Society to aid people with disabilities) TAMAC Project: "Development of accessible holiday locations in Macaronesia".
