| In 1975 the founder of Mar y Sol, Hans-Joachim Fischer, travelled
to Tenerife with his wife who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis and
who has since sadly died. This trip was taken following the advice
of the neurologists who were treating Mrs. Fischer in the University
Clinic Tübingen in Germany.
In view of the success of the trip Mr. Fischer and his severely
handicapped wife started visiting every year and stayed for several
weeks at a time in the, as then was, small fishermans village
of Los Cristianos, located in the southwest of the island.
Motivated by the positive effects of the weather on his wife, and
after talking to many other people in the same situation who repeatedly
came back to this area of Tenerife, he joined together with 7 investors
in November 1983 and founded the Mar y Sol-parent company
After having bought an adequate plot of land of aproximately 11.000
m2, the planning and construction of a hotel with 240 apartments
and studios began in 1986.
The main area of the project was almost completed in 1990 and the
hotel started operating this year.
Tragically Mr. Fischers wife died in november 1991 after
having been guest at Mar y Sol only once.
Mr. Fischer founded Kurhotel Mar y Sol S.L. in 1995, the actual
hotel company.
In December 1997 Mr. Fischer married Elli Baum-Fischer, who is
the director of the Therapy Center Teralava.
Mar y Sol was the first hotel in Europe, if not the world, that
it is fully wheelchair accessible and that meets all the requirements
of even the most severely handicapped guests.
All Studios and apartments that belong to the hotel are accessible.
